Diesel System

Diesel engine with automatic start — independent from power grid

Power-grid-independent solution: main centrifugal pump driven by a diesel engine with automatic start, directed exhaust, metal protective cover and external fuel tank per standard. Indicated for installations where electrical power reliability cannot be guaranteed or where the standard requires an independent primary driver. Includes weekly automatic engine test per NFPA 20 and NBR 10897.

System Components

All components integrated on a factory pre-aligned metal skid

Diesel Main Pump

FBCN normalized centrifugal pump coupled to a diesel engine with automatic battery start (2 × 12V). Includes directed exhaust and metal cover. Scheduled weekly test per NFPA 20.

Jockey Pump

Low-flow centrifugal pump with pressure equal to or greater than network working pressure. Compensates small leaks maintaining hydrostatic pressure and avoiding unnecessary activation of main pumps. Mandatory requirement in most NFPA 20 projects.

Diesel Control Panel

Panel dedicated to the diesel engine with battery management, automatic start control, alarms (oil pressure, temperature, RPM), scheduled weekly test and visual/audible signaling. Fully independent from the electric panel.

Pressure Switches

Calibrated pressure switches continuously monitoring network pressure. Activate jockey pump and main pump automatically on pressure drop. Two-level setting: jockey activation pressure and main pump activation pressure.

Pressure Tank

Hydropneumatic tank with membrane or diaphragm dampening pressure variations, preventing excessive jockey pump cycles and ensuring system stability at rest.

Fuel Tank

External diesel tank sized for minimum continuous operation autonomy per NFPA 20 and local standards. Includes level indicator, vent and contamination protection.

Starter Batteries

Dual 2 × 12V battery set for automatic diesel engine start. Redundant system per NFPA 20 — if one battery fails, the second ensures start.

Exhaust System

Directed diesel engine exhaust with silencer and thermal protection. Directed out of the pump house per safety and ventilation standards.

Metal Skid Base

Carbon steel structural base integrating all components (pumps, motors, panel, tank, accessories) in a single skid. Facilitates transport, installation and maintenance. Includes lifting lugs and factory alignment.

Applicable Standards

Compliance with national and international fire fighting standards

NFPA 20

Installation of stationary pumps for fire protection

American standard that establishes minimum requirements for selection, installation, operation, inspection, testing and maintenance of stationary fire protection pumps, including electric, diesel and jockey pumps. It is a mandatory technical reference in most Brazilian fire pump projects.

ABNT NBR 10897

Fire protection systems with automatic sprinklers

Brazilian standard establishing minimum requirements for design, installation and maintenance of fixed fire fighting systems with automatic sprinklers. Defines hydraulic sizing criteria for the fire pump, flow and pressure required as a function of risk.

ABNT NBR 13714

Hydrant and hose reel systems for fire fighting

Brazilian standard defining design and installation of hydrant and hose reel systems — integral part of the fire fighting system operating together with the fire pump. Specifies minimum flows per hydrant, residual pressures and risk classes.

ABNT NBR 16704

Stationary fire pump systems

Brazilian standard equivalent to and complementing NFPA 20 in the national scope. Establishes specific requirements for stationary fire pump systems adapted to Brazilian reality — includes testing criteria, certification and documentation.

9 main components integrated on a single skid: Diesel Main Pump, Jockey Pump, Diesel Control Panel, Pressure Switches, Pressure Tank, Fuel Tank, Starter Batteries, Exhaust System, Metal Skid Base. All components are sized per NFPA 20, ABNT NBR 10897, ABNT NBR 13714, ABNT NBR 16704 and delivered pre-assembled and factory-aligned.
The Diesel System is engineered per NFPA 20, ABNT NBR 10897, ABNT NBR 13714, ABNT NBR 16704. These standards cover hydraulic sizing, component selection, testing, inspection and maintenance of the fire pump system. FB Bombas issues all technical documentation needed for local Fire Department approval.
The Diesel System is indicated for: Refineries and petrochemical plants, Fuel terminals, Flammable storage depots, Remote installations without stable grid. The final selection depends on risk analysis, regulatory requirements and local regulations. Our engineering evaluates the project and recommends the most suitable configuration for each application.
FB Bombas is one of the oldest Brazilian industrial pump manufacturers (since 1944), with its own factory in Cabreúva/SP, CRCC Petrobras registration (approved supplier for Oil & Gas) and the FBCN line with 43 normalized models used as the main pump. Engineered-to-order projects by FB engineering, complete documentation for Fire Department approval and direct manufacturer technical support — no intermediaries.
Activation is fully automatic via calibrated two-level pressure switches: (1) jockey pump activation pressure — compensates small leaks without activating the main pump; (2) main pump activation pressure — triggers when pressure drop indicates fire fighting demand. The main pump only shuts down by manual command per NFPA 20, ensuring continuous operation during the event.
The panel schedules automatic weekly testing of the diesel engine per NFPA 20, verifying start-up, oil pressure, temperature and battery system. Results are logged for documentation. We recommend a preventive maintenance contract with FB Bombas to ensure continuous compliance.
FB Bombas supplies the Diesel System pre-assembled and aligned on a metal skid. Mechanical installation (anchoring, suction and discharge piping, electrical connections on client's network) is typically executed by the installer contracted by the client following our technical documentation, or we can indicate certified partners. Commissioning and startup assistance are available as additional services.
Yes — fire pump systems require inspection and testing routine per NFPA 20, ABNT NBR 10897, ABNT NBR 13714, ABNT NBR 16704.
