What is a pump skid

A skid (from the English "transport runner") is a rectangular metallic frame on which engineering mounts, aligns and tests at the factory all components of a pumping system — pump, motor, electrical panel, measurement instruments, valves, filters and internal piping. Instead of receiving loose parts and spending 2 to 6 weeks of fieldwork aligning and testing on site, the client receives a ready unit: unload from the truck, connect suction, discharge and power, and the system goes operational the same day. Factory process repeatability (assembly in controlled environment, laser alignment, certified hydrostatic test) eliminates typical field installation errors and significantly extends MTBF.

Skid Configurations

Skid Configurations

Each configuration designed by FB Bombas engineering

Fire Pump Skid (NFPA 20 / NBR 16704)

Complete system: FBCN centrifugal main pump, diesel or electric standby pump per risk classification, jockey pump for pressurization, certified automatic control panel, gauges, sensors and valves. Serves commercial buildings, hospitals, residential high-rises, chemical and petrochemical industries and shopping centers.

Applications: Hydrants (NBR 13714), sprinklers (NBR 10897), mixed networks, underground and surface pump houses.

Fuel Transfer Skid

Motor-pump unit for diesel, biodiesel, ethanol, kerosene and heavy fuel oils. Construction for flammable-fluid areas with explosion-proof motor, relief valve, Y-strainer on suction, flow meter and local panel. Ideal for captive fueling stations, fleets, emergency generators and logistics bases.

Applications: Captive stations, agricultural and mining fleet refueling, internal transfer at refineries, diesel generator feeding.

Thermal Oil Skid

FBOT pump specially designed for thermal oil up to 350°C — oil-immersed mechanical seal, cooling chamber, expansion vessel, drain and thermal insulation. For paint, asphalt, food, fine chemical, surface treatment and process heating industries via thermal fluid.

Applications: Thermal oil boilers, cardboard presses, paint and varnish dryers, polymerization processes.

Mobile Cart Unit

Pump + motor + accessories mounted on cart with pneumatic wheels — portable skid version for applications that change location. Electric drive (most common) or diesel (open-field autonomy). Useful in civil construction, mining, agriculture and emergency operations.

Applications: Well dewatering, temporary transfer at construction sites, emergency pumping during industrial shutdowns.

Structural advantages of the skid

Why choose a Skid

Structural advantages documented in FB deliveries

Installation time

From 2-6 weeks of fieldwork to 1-3 days of commissioning. Internal piping, alignment and hydrostatic test already completed at the factory.

Factory repeatability

Assembly in a controlled environment eliminates the most common field installation errors: shaft-coupling misalignment, inadequate torque, contamination during field welding.

Simplified maintenance

The skid is removable and disconnectable from fixed piping. During a planned shutdown, the skid can be replaced by another pre-commissioned unit in hours — useful for systems with strict availability SLAs.

Total cost of ownership

Despite the 10-20% higher initial investment compared to loose parts, the skid saves on installation labor, field rework and commissioning time. Positive ROI in the first year in almost all cases.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical answers from FB engineering

What is included in a FB Bombas pump skid?

FB Bombas engineering delivers complete skid: FBCN/FBE/FBEI/FBOT pump(s) per application, electric or diesel motor, control panel with certified automation, valves (gate, check, relief), filters, gauges, pressure and temperature sensors, internal piping in carbon steel or stainless, and mechanical frame in treated bent profile. All pre-aligned and bench-tested before delivery.

What is the difference between skid and motor-pump set?

A motor-pump set is just the pump coupled to the motor on a base. A skid adds control panel, instrumentation, valves, internal piping and accessories — a functional "pumping island" ready to use. The motor-pump set still requires field electrical and piping design; the skid arrives ready to connect.

How long does it take to manufacture a skid?

NFPA 20 fire pump skid with standard FBCN pump: 8 to 12 weeks. Custom skid with special pump (materiais especiais) or engineered material: 14 to 20 weeks. Includes design, manufacturing, bench FAT and complete documentation (FAT, manual, parts list, AS-BUILT drawings).

Does the skid leave the factory tested?

Yes. Every skid goes through FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) on the bench before shipping: hydrostatic test of internal piping at 1.5× operating pressure, pump operation test, electrical panel verification, instrument calibration. The client receives a FAT report with the documentation.

Can the skid be made to order?

Yes — it is standard. Each FB Bombas skid is designed from the client technical briefing: flow, pressure, fluid, temperature, environment (Ex classified area, outdoor, indoor), drive type, redundancy. FB covers from compact skids under 4m² to large units (>20m²) for heavy industry.

Does the fire pump skid need to be certified?

Yes. Fire pump skids must comply with NFPA 20 (international) and NBR 16704 (Brazilian). FB Bombas delivers complete technical documentation for state Fire Department approval and insurance audit — including certified pump curve, project ART (Technical Responsibility Note) and panel reports.
